New Yorkers hoping to see the Aug. 5/6 landing of NASA's huge?Mars rover Curiosity?alongside like-minded space fans can head to Times Square here on Sunday night (Aug. 5) to catch the rover's touchdown on the Red Planet live on a giant LED television screen.

NASA Television's coverage of the agency's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission landing will be broadcast live on the Toshiba Vision screen that hangs below the iconic New Year's Eve ball in Times Square, space agency officials say.

The broadcast begins at 11:30 p.m. EDT Sunday night and runs until 4 a.m. EDT Monday morning (Aug. 6). The exact time of landing is scheduled for 1:31 a.m. Aug. 6 EDT (0531 GMT), though it will be late Monday night at the rover's California-based mission control room.

"In the city that never sleeps, the historic Times Square will be the place for New Yorkers to participate in this historic landing," John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for science missions, said in a statement today (July 31). "When you think of all the big news events in history, you think of Times Square, and I can think of no better venue to celebrate this news-making event on Mars." NASA Curiosity probe is a Mini Cooper-size rover designed to spend two years exploring the vast Gale Crater in pursuit of some of?Mars' biggest mysteries, including the question of whether water, and maybe even life, ever existed there. The rover launched in November 2011 and is now poised to land in a nail-biting maneuver this weekend involving a hovering rocket-powered "Sky Crane" that will lower the vehicle to Mars' surface via tethers.?

The landing broadcast will originate from Mission Control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's in Pasadena, Calif., which designed the rover and is managing the mission. If the landing is successful, viewers will be able to see scientists receive the first signal from the rover on Mars.

The audio track for the broadcast will be carried on the online radio station Third Rock Radio, which can be accessed from the NASA homepage at and through the Tuneln mobile app.

"We're pleased the Toshiba Vision screens will offer a unique view of this great scientific achievement, the landing of the rover?Curiosity on Mars," said Eddie Temistokle, senior manager of corporate communications and corporate social responsibility for Toshiba America Inc.

Other sites around the country, including many of the NASA centers, will also host live viewing events for the landing, which is NASA's most ambitious and expensive planetary mission on the horizon.

Tiny Tokelau to be world's first solar-powered country

A project to convert the tiny island nation of Tokelau to all solar power is nearing fruition, as workers finish the first of three major panel arrays. Once activated, the installations should provide more than 90 percent of the power used by the islands' 1,711 residents.

Tokelau is a remote nation northeast of New Zealand?comprising three atolls, to which goods and passengers can only travel by boat. Their electricity needs, though modest, are met by burning diesel fuel in generators. The transportation of the nearly 2,000 barrels of fuel consumed each year costs the population around a million dollars ? a heavy toll.

The three solar arrays will generate about a megawatt in total, and batteries will keep the lights on at times when Tokelau's citizens previously could not afford to run generators. They are designed to withstand the humid and windy tropical environment, and actually produce a surplus of power, meaning the population can expand without taxing the system.

"We would expect this system to repay itself in five years, and?have?a 20-year project life before it needs any sort of significant maintenance," the director of Powersmart, the company that built the arrays, told 3 News in New Zealand.

The roughly nine million New Zealand dollars (around $7.3 million US) needed to plan and?build the installations was taken out in loans from the New Zealand government and contributed by the U.N. Development Programme.

When the installations are switched on in September, fossil fuels will only be necessary?for the three cars maintained by the country. Other countries and territories in the area, motivated by high fuel costs, plentiful sun, and relatively small populations, are also working on going all-renewable. Tuvalu, Samoa, and the Cook Islands may soon be the second, third, and fourth countries to rely almost entirely on solar power.

Policy action hopes drive Italy yields lower at auction

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's 10-year funding costs fell below 6 percent for the first time since April at an auction on Monday as hopes for a stronger crisis response from policymakers spurred demand for the debt of vulnerable euro zone members.

Spanish and Italian yields retreated from peaks hit early last week after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Thursday said he would do whatever was necessary to defend the euro, including tackling high government funding costs.

Similar expressions of commitment to the single currency by the leaders of Germany, France and Italy have reinforced expectations for steps to support Italian and Spanish bond markets.

The ECB meets on Thursday but the timing and nature of any further action is uncertain. Germany is opposed to a resumption of the ECB's secondary market bond-buying programme and euro zone officials have said September is shaping up to be a "make-or-break" month for the crisis.

Italy sold 5.48 billion euros in bonds, near the top of its planned issue range, meeting demand for 1.4 times that amount.

Benchmark 10-year borrowing costs fell to 5.96 percent from 6.19 percent at a similar auction a month ago.

"On balance, not an unreasonable set of results," said Richard McGuire a rate strategist at Rabobank in London.

"Despite the welcome dip in yields, though, Italy's cost of borrowing remains decidedly elevated. ... Overall, then, while these sales do provide some indication of an easing of tensions at the periphery, they also show considerable further progress on this front is needed."

Five-year borrowing costs eased to 5.29 percent from 5.84 percent at an auction held during a period of uncertainty before a European Union summit at the end of June.

Both five- and 10-year auction yields hit their lowest level since April.

Italy also sold 750 million euros of a November 2015 bond no longer issued on a regular basis.

Last Tuesday Italy's 10-year yields hit their highest since January at 6.6 percent as investors fretted about the cost of a potential sovereign bailout for Spain and the impact this could have on Italy and on the future of the single currency.

Analysts say that any disappointment following the ECB meeting on Thursday would trigger a new bout of bond selling.

"I think markets have enough confidence in the ECB to give it a few days. If nothing were to happen, though, yields would start rising again," said ING strategist Alessandro Giansanti.

Burdened with a 2 trillion euro debt and in the grip of recession, Italy has seen its debt costs track Spain's higher as Madrid struggles to retain market access amid budget troubles.

Should Madrid seek further aid after a bank bailout of up to 100 billion euros, investors' attention would turn to Italy, whose economy is twice that of Spain's and whose funding needs are much larger, totaling 450 billion euros this year.

With Monday's sale the Treasury has met around 64 percent of its annual goal.

A broad domestic investor base has helped Italy cope with shrinking foreign demand for its debt.

Large coupon payments and the Treasury's decision to cancel a mid-August bond sale due to thin liquidity during the summer season likely supported demand at Monday's sale.

If you will be paying high interest rates on card purchases, at least you should get a card that has a good rewards programme, a decent online credit card service, and satisfactory customer service.
