Working on a few things in your bedroom, doesn't make you an ...

And neither does talking about them make you an expert. I wrote this post a few weeks ago but deleted it until my blood started boiling again this morning. I read the following quote:

  1. Have a personal site
  2. Write
  3. Speak

?

It?s how you develop professionally and claim your space

I have a lot of time for Zeldman. He?s truly done a lot for our industry but I feel this is not the way forward for our industry. And this sums up my problem with a new wave of self-entitled speakers. This was quoted for Reasons To Be Creative, but has nothing to do with being creative and everything to do with being a personality, a web celebrity.

These aren?t bad things to do. Not at all. However, your work should speak for itself before you even try to claim your place in the industry. It shouldn?t be something that?s forced.

While I?ve pushed hard for more diversity in speaking and not just the usual clique, I am seeing an increased group of what I?d call newbies and inexperienced designers having started speaking. Don?t get me wrong,?I am so bloody glad there are novice speakers talking. That in itself is an amazing thing. But no one speaks from a novice place ? potentially because being seen as a novice is weak.?It?s great to see a variety of skills, but it comes with unprofessional behaviour or snide remarks such as ?I count myself as a true designer because I do HTML.?

This is not to say that you shouldn?t be new and speak. Not at all. Please do speak. But have some humility, don?t talk as if you?re a veteran ? let people know what you do and how and why it works for you rather than suggesting there is only one way to do things, or telling others they?re not ?true?, ?proper? or anything else to validate yourself.

Another great of our industry, Chris Coyier. A man, who?s spent a lot of his free time just handing out his knowledge he?s learnt on a silver platter for everyone to take, said something the other day which I truly agreed with.

As long as I?ve been blogging, I?ve had a full-time job. So I?m in the trenches of web design, not just speaking about it from afar. I get to speak from experience, and I think people connect with me for that reason, at least on some level.

There needs to be a middle-ground. Those who speak often have less time for doing actual work, which means there is a good chance where the people teaching and speaking are behind the curve. I?ve seen this happen with some major names in my life. That the ?thought leaders? are behind those on the front lines. It?s not a rule of thumb, but it definitely happens. Most veterans in the industry can get away with it because they learn faster, and have a lot more?knowledge?to balance it out. But add someone who?s relatively new to the industry or not very well experienced and you have a situation of the blind leading the industry.

I recently read a post damning Sass as a ?fad? and that it?s wrong for every project. What later transpires is that on most projects the poster only takes a maximum of 10 hours for the CSS. Yet the developer spoke about how Sass was wrong for everything and everyone. A speaker no less!?There are many different types of projects on the web. Small, (upto 20 hours), Medium (a few months), Large (6+ months), Enterprise (5+ years) and Your Own. Personally, I?ve worked on all ? but I still don?t feel confident?committing to?a prescription for all. Every project is different and should be treated as such. The speakers are the people who help define the culture of the industry. It?s who newbies see, and who they learn how to act from.

Part of it is still due to the shock. I stopped going to design conferences after SXSW 2008, and only started back in 2012. I was tired of the speakers saying the same things I heard years earlier, and I just wanted to get on with my work. It was?therapeutic?and something I recommend for everyone. But I wanted to start getting back into them, meeting new people and enjoying myself around like-minded folks. But after my hiatus I saw speakers I had never heard of (which I loved) but who I felt hadn?t the skill nor experience to be speaking so strongly as they did (which I didn?t.)

One response I received was ?Why don?t you speak?? Quite fair ? I don?t speak because I spend a lot of my time helping thousands of people through IM one-to-one. I?ve tried StackOverflow but didn?t enjoy the medium. I?m writing an open-source book in my very little spare time. I?ve written a lot of open-source code and contributed to non-profit projects too, some very popular. I?ve been asked to speak, and am every year (at two different conferences and a meetup this year.) But speaking to people isn?t my thing ? I prefer the one-on-one interactions. I have no intentions of being famous (internet or not) ? I just want to create cool shit.

What I should have said when I?ve called out for more speakers was: I want there to be a bigger diversity of speakers, but those who?ve proved themselves. Not those who think being in this industry is about being a web celebrity. If you spend your life talking about what you ?should be? doing, rather than what you are doing, you have a lot less to give the industry.

(Thanks to Phil Sherry for the title.)

Fumes killed nine in Algeria well tragedy | Morocco World News

ALGIERS, Sept 1, 2012 (AFP) -

A probe has found that toxic fumes were to blame for the deaths of nine people, including six members of the same family, in a well in eastern Algeria, the country?s APS news agency reported on
Saturday.

Police investigators said the well in Ali Mendjeli near the city of Constantine had been dug with no ventilation system or other security measures.

The first victim of Friday?s tragedy climbed down to clean the well but was asphyxiated by fumes from a pump. Four of his brothers, a cousin and a neighbour also died trying to rescue him, along with two rescue workers, APS reported.

A younger brother was rescued alive and hospitalised along with four of the rescue team, it said.

PAX welcomes 70,000 gamers home

18 hrs.

You know you're at the Penny Arcade Expo when you see princesses in full regalia rubbing shoulders with giant-eared?elves and gun-toting?space marines.

You know you're at the Penny Arcade Expo when you see throngs of people lined up to get their photograph taken with a zombie ... or see them joking around with a walking, talking mushroom.

You definitely?know you're at the Penny Arcade Expo when you see Star Wars?Stormtroopers dancing to klezmer music.

That is to say,?you never know what you might see at the annual gaming extravaganza more commonly known as PAX Prime.

PAX? Prime?is an annual convention under way in Seattle this weekend. It's an event that has drawn some?70,000 gamers from around the world to?the Washington State Convention Center to celebrate gaming in all its forms.

It's here that video game companies large and small show off their latest projects, giving gamers a chance to get their hands on forthcoming titles months and sometimes years ahead of their launch. ("Borderlands 2,""ZombiU" and "Dishonored" are just a few on display this year.)

But PAX is?more than that. Much more.?Here you'll find gamers gathered together playing tabletop and card?games like "Munchkin," "ZoxSo" and "Ninja Versus Ninja." You'll find them trying their hand at old-school arcade games like "Ms. Pac Man" and "Donkey Kong." And you'll find rooms full of players laser-focused on?high-end PCs as they?compete?for bragging rights and real-world loot in games such as "League of Legends" and "Dota 2."

You'll also find gamers attending dozens and dozens of?panel discussions on topics such as how to break into the games industry, how to?raise young geeks and gamers, and?how?make game-related costumes and other handmade geeky?goods.

The creators of the Penny Arcade web comic --?Mike "Gabe" Krahulik and Jerry "Tycho" Holkins -- started the Penny Arcade Expo back in 2004 to give gamers a convention of their very?own (see InGame editor?Todd Kenreck's video below for more on that). ?The event has?grown so popular (not to mention so big)?that in 2010 they started PAX East in Boston. And this year, demand for?PAX Prime tickets was so high they sold out in less than 24 hours.

And now PAX is going international for the first time. Krahulik and Holkins on Friday announced that they will host a Penny Arcade Expo in?Australia starting?next year. Meanwhile,?PAX Prime in Seattle will grow from a?three-day event to a?four-day event?starting next year.

So why has PAX become such a mecca for gamers? As the?people who attend the event year after year?will tell you -- while ?conventions like the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles are focused on the business of gaming, the thing that makes PAX ?special is that it is all about the players themselves.?It's a three-day?celebration of everything that is awesome about playing games and being a gamer. And it is designed to be a welcoming place for the many different elements?that make up the gaming community at large.

"PAX is the thing I look forward to the most because it's home to me," said?Stephen Toulouse, an avid gamer and former director of policy and enforcement at Xbox Live, ?as he opened a talk about treating each other well in online?games. "You are my people."

"The heart of PAX is about?bringing people together who play games," said Amanda Wan, who arrived at PAX dressed up like the character?Riven from "League of Legends."

She has been coming to PAX?for six years and says that, yes, the event has gotten far more epic. But she pointed out,??"They've stayed true to the purpose of bringing gamers together."

And what, exactly,?happens when you get 70,000 gamers together in one place??

Stormtroopers dance. Zombies pose for photos. Elves, princesses and space marines all live happily together.

"Everybody just gets together, nerds out and has a blast," explained Alli White, who drove to Seattle?from Rathdrum, Idaho, just to attend the event. ?"It's just all-around awesome."

Winda Benedetti?writes?about video?games for NBC?News. You can follow her tweets about games and?other things on Twitter here?@WindaBenedetti,?and you can?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.

Suit says special law for NFL stadium project is unconstitutional

August 31, 2012

In the first major legal challenge to a planned NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles, a coalition of environmental activists and community advocates filed suit Thursday claiming that a state law intended to assist the project is unconstitutional.

Developer Anschutz Entertainment Group and supporters of the project ? dubbed Farmers Field ? had successfully lobbied for passage of the law, which fast-tracks legal challenges to the stadium's environmental impact report by imposing deadlines and requiring such lawsuits to begin at the Court of Appeal level.

But a group known as the Play Fair at Farmers Field coalition is arguing that the state Constitution protects its right to file challenges to the environmental review in county Superior Court. Its suit also says the review process established by the California Environmental Quality Act cannot be superseded by the newer law.

Coalition attorney Dan Stormer called the law an unfair attack on the environmental review process. The suit asks the court to void the law.

AEG spokesman Michael Roth said he had not read the lawsuit and could not comment on specifics. But he accused the coalition of trying to "undermine the state's legislative will" and said he was "highly confident in the legality" of the law crafted for the project.

The coalition wants more traffic- and air-pollution-control measures, as well as increased support from AEG for low-income housing in the area. Extended delays from legal challenges could hurt the city's chances of getting an NFL stadium, which is proposed for a site next to the AEG-operated Staples Center and the L.A. Live residential and entertainment complex.

Maria Elena Durazo, head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, defended AEG's expedited environmental review process, noting that many jobs are at stake. The City Council is expected to vote on the environmental report for the stadium proposal in September.
